I know, this is a controversial issue. I have met a few instances where others have become victims of discrimination simply because of their skin tone.
I was in this cabin on the train. opposite me was a lady who looked like she was in her mid thirties, she had settled down onto her seat around the same time as i did. And since there were empty seats at both of her sides, ppl would naturally just SIT right? And so an Indian national happily sat down beside her and beckoned his friend to come along. Then the lady stopped whatever she was doing/thinking (including breathing) and stared at him. Then he sensed her looking at him and looked right back at her.
There was that moment of silence between them.
The woman then hurriedly stood up and "fled" to another cabin.
The guy amazingly turned to his already-seated friend and laughed as he narrated what the woman did.
I was actually sniggering to myself as well. She looked at him as if he was a leper. The narrow-mindedness of that woman, made her look like a clown. Well, i was just laughing at her "extreme"-ness at avoiding the foreign workers.
Another instance, was after Marc and i were at the cinema. The movie had ended, the lights had been switched on.
There was this middle-aged lady sitting right at the end of the row, making it a definite thing that Marc and i would have to bypass her in order to leave the place. And i had already noticed that when the two of us were making our way to our seats at the start of the show, she was staring at us. But when we were getting off our seats and moving off, i noticed her eyes.
Her eyes were wide open, as big as saucers. And she had lifted her legs up so high that she looked like she was performing an acrobatic stunt for us. Her entire body was giving us the message that she STRONGLY wished that we do not have any sort of physical contact with her.
Oh, guess who was she staring at with her eyes wide open?
Marc.
Not because of his "striking good looks". But almost definitely, the colour of his skin.
I was infuriated but didnt do anything besides frown. Marc saw me frowning and told me to smile and be happy because it's so seldom that we can have time together and so i shouldnt be frowning the precious time away. I replied with a "Yeah, but......" and trailed off.
Why didnt i go up to her and do what i could have done? I could have went up to her, smile politely and ask her if anything was "wrong". And maybe slap her in the face. She looked like a real refined, elderly lady who was definitely educated. But why is she behaving in such an unrefined manner of ostracising ppl of different ethnic groups without trying to understand them better and see that it is only skin deep?
A person's character is not defined by his skin colour, hair colour, or whatever colour. You cant simply judge them just by looking at their appearance (even though some ppl do look very sneaky)!
Was so pissed at that woman that i couldnt sleep.
